Among the most interesting buildings we must highlight the following: in Portugalete, Santa María’s Basilica (15th century) and its main altarpiece, declared a Cultural Good categorised as Monument, and Salazar Tower (14th century); we will find both of them in Portugalete’s old quarter, also declared Historical Monument. • In Getxo, Andra Mari’s church, a good example of the Biscayan Baroque, and the riverside area, declared Historical Monument categorised as Classified Cultural Good. San Pelaio’s chapel, in Bakio, is an example of the rare Basque Romanesque. The “juradera” church of Santa Eufemia, in Bermeo, and Andra Mari’s church, in Gernika, are two good examples of the Gothic style.
In Lekeitio we will find the Basilica of La Asunción de Santa María, a Gothic building with a remarkable Flemish altarpiece dating from the early 16th century. Due to its dimensions and polychromy, it is one of the most important altarpieces in Spain. In Ondarroa we should have a look at Santa María’s church, whose exterior is the most profusely decorated among the Biscayan temples.
Added to that, the whole of Bizkaia Basque Coast is spotted with typical farmhouses; these alternate with luxurious mansions in places like Neguri (Getxo) and Bakio, showing the evolution of a culture which has not lost its roots.
