It is a sacred, almost magical place linked to the mainland by a narrow bridge built over some rocks. 231 stairs lead to a 10th century chapel built at the top of the inlet; it was a pilgrimage point to many fishermen. Being one of the most stunning places in the Bay of Biscay, visiting San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a must. This unforgettable enclave stands between Bakio and Bermeo and is part of the San Juan de Gaztelugatxe biotope, a protected natural area of high ecological value. Heading north, and leaving aside the prominent and lonely crag of Aketze, we will get to Matxitxako Cape, the bow of Biscay, whose lighthouse aids all the ships approaching the Basque coast.
