Bakio is a unique, beautiful municipality surrounded by mountains, farmhouses and cliffs stretching out for 6 kilometres. This picturesque village has become an obligatory stop in the route of the Basque coast.
The beach is the most remarkable feature of Bakio; it is the longest in Biscay, and has complied with the most demanding regulations (ISO 9001 Quality Certification and ISO 14001 Environmental Certification, EMAS System, Ecoplayas 2007 Flag).
A walk along the promenade will show us the beach and the strength of the waves. In fact, Bakio is one of the favourites destinations of surfers and wave skiers, Kayak Surfing, etc. If you are a nature lover or want to know Bakio’s heritage better, three signposted and self-guided routes will show you all the highlights: chapels, mills, monumental buildings, farmhouses, cliffs, wineyards and all the richness of our landscape.
Nevertheless, if we had to define Bakio with a single word, that word would be Txakoli. Bakio’s sheltered geographic location has created a mild microclimate which is ideal for growing autochthonous grape varieties. That is the origin of Txakoli, a unique wine that goes wonderfully with fish and seafood.
... Bakio comes from the Basque word ‘bakea’ (peace), and means haven of peace?
