BERMEO

The Port of Bermeo

Linked to the sea from time immemorial, Bermeo is the most important fishing town in Biscay. This is shown by the large number of sea-related tourist resources it offers. The port thrives with activity when the ships bring their catch.

The fishermen’s guild, the quays, the ships and the houses in the old port reflect Bermeo’s relationship with the sea. For that reason, the visitor cannot miss the old quarter and the port, with its fleet of multicoloured vessels. Housed in the Ercilla tower, the Fisherman’s Museum bears witness to many centuries of marine tradition, showing the arts, vessels, rigs and the history of an ancestral practice. The Aita Guria whaler, due to open soon as an interpretation centre, will show all the aspects related to the ancient tradition of whaling. Not everything in Bermeo is limited to just looking and admiring. For those who prefer a more participatory experience there are activities to suit all tastes -walking, cycling and all types of water sports, both on and under the water. In addition, Bermeo has an extensive cultural and festival programme which allows visitors to take part and to learn a little more about the idiosyncrasies of its people.

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

... On a rock under the water, right beneath the chapel of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, there is a statue of the Virgin of Begoña, to which Biscayan scuba divers pay a floral tribute every year?
