Gernika

Gernika Basque Parliament Buildings

Gernika lies at the heart of the Urdaibai biosphere reserve. It symbolises the history of Basque people and their traditions like no other town.

The bombing of Gernika was a crucial turning point in the history of the village.

The Casa de Juntas (Assembly House) and the Tree of Gernika are compulsory visits. The current building is actually the Parliament of Biscay, and symbolises Basque rights. This is where the “lehendakari”, the president of the Basque government, gets sworn in.

Every Monday, the market of Gernika offers the visitor a unique opportunity to mix with the locals and buy farmhouse products bearing the Basque quality label. Gernika peppers and beans. You cannot either miss the Euskadi Pyrenean Cattle Championship, held on the first Sunday and Monday of October, or the agricultural fair, which takes place on the last Sunday and Monday of October.

Gernika has been awarded the UNESCO “CITY FOR PEACE” prize. The Peace Museum’s permanent exhibition offers an insight into that terrific event.
