Ondarroa is a place of lively contrast, where the mountains and the sea come face to face. It is a place where tradition and modernity coexist in the same streets.
We will be overwhelmed by its strong character and sincere hospitality.
The port of Ondarroa is, as regards the volume of fresh catch, the most important deep-sea fishing port on the Cantabrian coast. In the past, the "arrantzales" (Basque fishermen) tied up their "txalupas" (boats) next to the Old Bridge. However, due to the development of the fishing industry in the late 19th century, it soon became necessary to construct new infrastructure.
The streets of Ondarroa are buzzing. You only have to walk down Artabide and Itsasaurre in the morning, around the port, or Erribera and Nasa kalea in the Old Quarter, to see the vitality of this town. While walking around you will be able to hear the particular Basque dialect spoken in the town, a true Ondarroan treasure and cornerstone ot their cultural identity.
