Many years ago, when Santurtzi was the major coastal fishing port in Biscay, the “sardineras” (sardine sellers) used to stroll along the port. These women became famous by the popular, romantic song “Desde Santurce a Bilbao”. Unfortunately, we will no longer find them there.
However, we can still smell the delicious aroma of grilled fish brought by the sea wind. Visitors cannot resist the temptation of trying the famous sardines of Santurtzi, or any other seasonal fish grilled in the traditional way. One cannot either miss the spectacular scenery of the Abra Bay from the viewpoint near Oriol Palace. Somebody once compared that landscape with the San Francisco bay.
The bravest visitors can climb Serantes Mountain. Due to its pyramidal shape, Serantes was studied thoroughly during the 18th century, it was thought to be a volcano. The idea was, however, ruled out when no traces of plutonic rocks were found. Besides offering superb views, Serantes mountain is full of trails and old fortifications. The “Cornites” Pilgrimage also takes place there every year. We can also watch migratory birds as they fly through the sky in search of warmer climates.
The whole Basque Coast and its municipalities have a similar character but at the same time each one is different. That character is reflected in the fiestas of Santurtzi, full of ancient traditions which bring the past alive, offering the visitor an unforgettable and unique experience.
... until the arrival of the horse-drawn tram, the “sardineras” of Santurtzi walk from Santurce to Bilbao (14 km) barefoot, carrying a basket of sardines on their heads?
